What Is Post-Construction Cleaning?
Quick answer
Post-construction cleaning is the cleaning done after renovation or construction work to remove the fine dust and residue that the work leaves behind. It covers surfaces, trim, cabinets inside and out, fixtures, window sills and floors, so the space is ready to move into, photograph or hand over. It does not include removing construction debris.
Why construction dust is different
Sanding drywall, cutting wood and tile, and demolition produce dust far finer than everyday household dust. It drifts into closed cabinets, settles on every ledge and returns if it is pushed around instead of captured. That is why post-construction cleaning is usually done in stages rather than in one quick pass.
Typical stages
- Rough clean during or after the build, once debris is removed, to take away the bulk of the dust.
- Detailed clean after all trades finish: surfaces, cabinets, fixtures, trim, sills and floors.
- Touch-up clean right before move-in, photos or handover, for dust that settled after the detailed clean.
Smaller projects, like a single bathroom remodel, may only need the detailed clean.
What it covers
- Dust removal from walls (where appropriate), ledges, trim and door frames
- Inside and outside cabinets, drawers and closets
- Light fixtures, hardware, faucets and outlet covers
- Window sills and tracks
- Floors vacuumed and cleaned, including edges
- Kitchen and bathroom surfaces
What it does not cover
- Removing debris, scrap materials or dumpsters
- Hazardous material handling or disposal
- Repairs, touch-up painting or caulking
Paint, adhesive and grout haze depend on the surface; ask before assuming they are included.
When to schedule it
Book the detailed clean after the last dust-producing work is done, including final trim, paint touch-ups and HVAC work. If floors are being refinished, coordinate timing with the flooring contractor.
